The Lewis-Clark State College women’s volleyball team keeps winning and continues to hold on to the No. 9 spot for the fifth straight week in the Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Top 25 poll, which came out on Tuesday.
The Warriors, 25-1 overall and riding a 17-game win streak, are just one of four teams in the NAIA with one or no losses. Top-ranked Lee University is 32-0, while University of Texas at Brownsville is second at 31-2 and Northwestern College of Iowa is fourth at 32-0.
LCSC drew 502 points in this week’s poll, which featured the top 17 teams remaining in the same ranking as a week ago. Azusa Pacific, one of five Golden State Athletic Conference teams ranked in the top 11, is at No. 8 with 520 points.
The important ranking is the final poll this Sunday after all of the conference tournaments have been played. The top 12 teams will receive a bye in the opening round of the NAIA national tournament and will head to Sioux City, Iowa on Nov. 30-Dec. 4 for the pool play portion of the national tournament. The remaining 24 teams invited to the national tournament will play 12 opening-round matches at sites to be determined next week. Those 12 opening-round winners will also advance to the pool play portion of nationals.
This is the third year the NAIA has used the opening round format and in the two previous years, the Warriors were not ranked in the top 12 and had to play an opening round match.
The Warriors can solidify their ranking this week when they play host to the eight-team single-elimination Frontier Conference Tournament at the LCSC Activity Center on Friday and Saturday. The Warriors are seeking their fourth straight conference tourney title and are the No. 1 seed. LCSC’s first match is at noon on Friday against Montana Western. At 2 p.m., No. 4 seed Westminster and No. 5 seed Montana Tech will meet. The winner of those two matches will meet in the semifinals at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The other side of the bracket has No. 2 Rocky Mountain and No. 7 Montana State-Northern at 5 p.m., followed by No. 3 Carroll and No. 6 Great Falls at 7 p.m. Those two winners play in the 1 p.m. semifinal match on Saturday. The championship match will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Frontier Conference has only had one national qualifier each year, but could have two this season. Rocky Mountain is currently ranked No. 18 in the national poll.
