The Lewis-Clark State College women’s volleyball team definitely won’t be able to count on having the most experience among the teams in its pool at the NAIA National Tournament. According to the pool pairings listed in the NAIA’s announcement on Monday, the Warriors will be amongst some of the most frequent returners to nationals.

The Warriors, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA with a 21-4 record, are in the same pool as No. 5 Columbia (Mo.), No. 17 Indiana Tech, and Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) which is tied for No. 18.

Despite being placed in a tough pool, first-year LCSC head coach LaToya Harris expects her team to be ready for the challenge.

“I would say the entire season we’ve had a tough schedule, so I think we’re prepared to compete at nationals,” said Harris. “We just have to stay on our toes and come out ready from the start.”

The round-robin pool play portion of the 32nd annual NAIA National Tournament will be held Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa. The top-two teams from each of the six pools will advance to the single elimination bracket starting on Dec. 2. The championship match will be held on Dec. 3.

Lewis-Clark State will open pool play against Indiana Tech on Nov. 29, followed by Point Loma Nazarene on Nov. 30, and Columbia on Dec. 1. All of the Warriors’ matches will start at 1:15 p.m., Pacific time.

LCSC is making its fifth straight trip to the tournament and 12th overall. Last season the Warriors went 2-1 during pool play to advance to the single-elimination bracket. In single-elimination play, the Warriors knocked off Azusa Pacific but then fell to Lee University in the quarterfinals.

Indiana Tech is making its fourth appearance at nationals. The Warriors of Fort Wayne, Ind., took down Point Park University 3-1 in the opening round. Last year, Indiana Tech was defeated in the opening round by Malone University.

Point Loma Nazarene is making its 14th appearance at the national tournament. In all, the Sea Lions have a record of 45-23 at nationals, but have yet to come away with a title. They knocked off No. 24 Cal-State San Marcos 3-1 in the opening round, a team which LCSC fell to 3-2 to open the season.

The Warriors have a history with Point Loma as the two teams were placed in the same pool at last year’s tournament. The then-ranked No. 9 Warriors were upset by Point Loma (No. 17) in five sets. Both LCSC and Point Loma were the two teams to advance out of the pool.

In Columbia, the Warriors will be facing a team making its 18th national tournament appearance. The Cougars hold a 70-36 all-time mark at nationals and have won the title three times with their last championship coming in 2001. Last season Columbia fell to Fresno Pacific in the title match.

Harris said that of all the teams in the pool the team she is focusing on most is her own.

“I’m most concerned with our team right now. If we don’t show up then it doesn’t matter who the other team is or what the other team does.”

The Warriors were one of 12 teams that received an opening-round bye in this year’s 36-team tournament, while the remaining 24 teams played on Saturday in single-elimination play.
