Niurka Toribio of the Lewis-Clark State College volleyball team was named the Frontier Conference’s Player of the Week Monday after registering a match-high 25 kills as the Warriors defeated Rocky Mountain College in five sets last Friday night.
The win helped the Warriors remain unbeaten in Frontier Conference play with a 5-0 record and lift the squad to an 8-5 overall mark.
It was just the third match of the season for Toribio, a junior who has given the Warriors a huge shot in the arm with her on-court brilliance and her off-court exuberance.
“That’s just natural for her. She loves life,” Warrior coach LaToya Harris said of Toribio. “I told her that when she became eligible she needed to go off, and she has.”
Harris added that Toribio has the ability to read opposing defenses in the air, and swing accordingly.
“She’s a very smart player, and her kills don’t just come from free balls on perfect sets,” Harris said. “She can attack from the back row, she can pass and move and she can serve-receive. She’s one of those players that are a luxury to have. She just brings a lot of relaxation and fun to what we do."
The Warriors will look to extend their league unbeaten streak with a pair of Frontier Conference road matches this week. LCSC will be at Great Falls on Thursday before traveling on to Montana State-Northern on Friday.
Both matches start at 6 p.m.
