Warrior Volleyball
Lewis-Clark State College
Game Story vs. Simon Fraser

RICHLAND, WA--The 2000 volleyball season got underway Saturday night at Richland High School as the third-ranked (NAIA) Lewis-Clark State College Warriors defeated the Simon Fraser University Clan, three games to none, in a non-conference match.

The Clan got off to an early 12-6 lead in the first game before LC gathered themselves and put together a run that would take them to the 16-14 win. "When we came back in the first game, that was the key for us winning the match," said LC head coach Kip Yoshimura. The Warriors tied the score at 12 on a kill from junior outside hitter Sandy Arend (Tacoma, WA). Lewis-Clark State won the game when freshmen middle blockers Julie Hilt (Fort Collins, CO) and Amy Flaig (Missoula, MT) combined on a block for game point.

In game two, the Clan got off to a bad start as the team was given a yellow card for delay of game. Simon Fraser jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but the Warriors stormed back reeling off seven straight points. The Clan would close the gap to 7-6, but LC pulled away again to a 12-6 advantage. Within that run, junior middle blocker, Amber Weatherspoon (Athena, OR) unleashed a couple of dominating kills. SFU would draw to within three, 13-10, but LC slammed the door shut at 15-10.

Game three was back-and-forth until LC took the last four points in a row to win the match. "Simon Fraser is a talented an experienced team," said Yoshimura. "I was pleased at how well the freshmen played and how well the team played with four new starters on the court."

Two-time NAIA All-America, Angela Igoe (Firth, ID), did not play Saturday night. She is still recovering from an injury that bothered her the majority of last year. She is expected to play in the next match, Saturday, September 2, at Portland, OR. The Warriors play Warner Pacific College at 3:00 pm and then play Concordia University of Oregon at 7:00 pm.
