Warriors Defeat Redhawks and Bruins

LEWISTON, ID--The 25th-ranked Lewis-Clark State College Warriors won a pair of non-conference matches to wrap-up the Holiday Inn Express Invitational, Saturday, at Warrior Gymnasium. Lewis-Clark State defeated NCAA Division II, Seattle University, 3-0, and then played one of its best matches in a long time with a 3-2 win over 10th-ranked Bellevue University.

In the nightcap, the Warriors (4-1) wanted to step up the level of play against the highly-regarded Bruins. The night before, 8th-ranked Concordia defeated L-C 3-2, and jumped out to a big lead in the fifth game. That was not going to happen Saturday night.

Bellevue (3-1) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and appeared to be heading towards a sweep. The Warriors were not going to let that happen and played inspired volleyball winning the final three games, including the 15-9 battle in game five. In that fifth game, a controversial call on whether or not a ball was out of bounds, proved to sink the Bruins. Head coach Deb Grafentin was issued a yellow card, and then a red card, for arguing the call. With the red card, Lewis-Clark State was awarded a point, and then went on to win the game, and match one play later.

Angela Igoe powered 24 kills to lead the Warriors while Tamekia Moore added 17 of her own. Freshman setter Jennifer Covelli tallied 62 assists. Amanda Page chimed in with 24 digs and 13 kills.

The All-Tournament Team is as follows: Becky Boslau, Stacey Hines, Lisa Walker (Bellevue); Emily Weaver, Andrea Rose, Mindy Wallis (Concordia University); Erika Brunson (Seattle University); Rozalia Staniszewski (Simon Fraser University); Angela Igoe, Tamekia Moore, Jennifer Covelli (Lewis-Clark State). Igoe was selected as the tournament’s MVP.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Warriors cruised to a 3-0 win over the Redhawks of Seattle University. Igoe led LCSC with 12 kills and Covelli added 33 assists. Kim Conder led the defense with 13 digs.

Other score on Saturday are: Simon Fraser over Victoria, 3-0; Bellevue defeated Concordia, 3-1; Seattle defeated Simon Fraser, 3-1; and, Concordia rolled to a 3-0 win over Victoria.

The Warriors will venture to Nampa for the Northwest Nazarene University Tournament, next weekend. On Friday, L-C will open with Simon Fraser at 8:00 AM, and then will take on The Master’s College at noon. The tournament concludes on Saturday with matches against Seattle, at 2:00 PM, and NNU, at 6:30 pm.
