Joni joined the BTS faculty in 2003 to teach in the Legal Support Programs. A native of Moloka`i, Hawai`i, she holds a B.A. in humanities and a Ph.D. in education from Washington State University.
More relevant, however, is the fact that she spent almost 30 years as a litigation paralegal and law firm administrator, "doing" what she teaches.
In teaching, she connects her students to the work world by emphasizing competence, professionalism, critical thinking, and relevance to practice; by providing them with stimulating and challenging curricula; and by encouraging balance in their professional and personal lives.
She has published and presented papers on her work on the National Study of Academic Deans, web response, and educational leadership. Currently, her primary research areas focus upon women in leadership as well as paralegal licensure and attorney admission trends (a byproduct of her service work with the Character & Fitness and Disciplinary Boards of the Washington State Bar Association).
