Legal Assistants perform
administrative duties related to the law. Some specialize in particular types of
law. They prepare correspondence and legal papers that include summonses (notices to
appear in court), complaints, motions, and subpoenas (notices requiring appearance in
court to give testimony) under the supervision of an attorney. They also may review
legal journals and assist in other ways with legal research.
Legal assistants type, transcribe, maintain files, and perform other clerical
duties. They may also make initial drafts of common legal documents.
Additional duties may include payment of bills for witness fees and process fees,
recording of trial dates, scheduling the appearance of witnesses, production of evidence
at trials, and delivery of subpoenas.
