Spey Casting - An Introduction
by Greg Pearson
Developed in the 19th century
in Scotland along the banks of the River Spey, spey casting
allows an angler to present the fly toward the middle of the
river when there is little room for a backcast. Spey
casting, in its many forms and styles, is thus perfectly
suited to many of our Pacific Northwest steelhead rivers.
You'll be introduced to the basic theory of spey casting on
Friday evening - learning the 3 basic principles of spey
casting, when to use which cast, the 3 major styles of spey
casting, and equipment, before hitting the river over the
weekend. You will spend one-on-one time with your
instructors perfecting the ability to safely cast with a
downstream and upstream wind from either bank. Come
prepared to wade ( should be easy wading, knee depth or
less) and be prepared for the elements with sunscreen,
sunglasses, hat, rain jacket, drinking water, etc.
