SUBJECT:       Course Proposals for 2009 Kids' College classes

Please find the attached LCSC Continuing Education & Community Events Course Proposal Form for Kids’ College. PLEASE NOTE: Even if you have taught for us before, you must fill out the online proposal form. If you are teaching the same class as the previous term, you may simply tell us to use the previous copy for your course and instructor descriptions (though we recommend an occasional revision). However, we must have a course proposal form with the rest of the information filled out each time you wish to teach. Please type or write clearly and send a separate printed or online form for each class you wish to teach.

CLASSES ARE SELECTED by the perceived marketability of the class, our ability to schedule the facilities required by the class, the appropriateness of the class for the community, the basis of your teaching qualifications, and the overall balance and diversity of Kids’ College offerings for the term. In any given term, we may not be able to select your class.

Continuing Education & Community Events will not offer classes that are clearly promoting private interests, advocating civil disobedience, recruiting for a religious organization, endangering the public welfare, or misrepresenting Lewis-Clark State College and/or its policies and procedures.

CONTENT OF A CLASS is determined by the instructor. Remember that young learners taking summer classes do so for the fun of it, as well as to expand their knowledge of certain subject areas that may not be part of their normal educational curriculum.

CLASS LENGTH is 1 hour and 45 minutes each day * (Mon-Thurs).
*Except for Children's Theater and half-day camps. Here are the regular class times for this year:

  • 8:30 a.m.-10:15 a.m.

  • 10:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

  • LUNCH*

  • 1:15 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

  • 3:15 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

*Lunch time differs slightly for Children's Theatre and half-day camps.

SESSION LENGTH is four-days, Monday-Thursday. The four day sessions were made to accommodate families and instructors. This year's sessions are:

  • Session I- June 22-25
  • Session II- July 6-9
  • Session II- July 20-23
  • Session IV- August 3-6

INSTRUCTOR PAY is a stipend of $200.00 (approximately $25.00/hr) for each four-day, one hour and 45 minute per day, session. Instructors are expected to be present 15 minutes before their class begins. Please note that the stipend amount has increased from last year's stipend of $150.00. Since instructors will be teaching 7 hours a session per class, the stipend has been adjusted.

Please note: Instructors may expect to wait approximately four to six weeks after the completion of their class before receiving their first check and are paid on the earliest pay date after all paperwork has been processed through the CECE office. The necessary forms include: W4, I-9 (with 2 forms of ID), Direct Deposit, and PERSI Verification.

CLASS FEES
are set by Continuing Education & Community Events with additional supply or material fees set by a CECE representative in consultation with the instructor. At this time, we anticipate offering1 hour and 45 minute classes at $50 per class with a $40 early-bird or multiple-class registration option. Our four-hour Science Adventure camps will be $99. Our Children’s Theatre Workshop will be $60. Generally, extra expenses such as copying costs or video rentals are included in the class fee. Supply fees are in addition to the class fee, and will be advertised and collected with the registration payment.

MAXIMUM/MINIMUM ENROLLMENTS
are set by the instructor and a Continuing Education representative. Minimum enrollment is set by CECE at seven students. Final determination will be made by a Continuing Education representative. Maximum enrollment is usually 12 students (except for half-day camps).

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS and INSTRUCTOR BIOS used in the Kids’ College schedule and other publications are taken directly from course proposal forms. Please write these as you would like them to appear in print, using complete sentences and keeping to 50 words for course description and 25-35 words for bios. However, we reserve the right to edit descriptions. In the case of computer class offerings, please include any prerequisites (i.e., keyboarding/mouse experience, familiarity with Windows environment, etc.) necessary for the class.

Hints: Course descriptions should focus on the content or the learner. Opener techniques include a definition, the end result, a question, an outstanding or impressive fact, and/or quotation. Course descriptions should be enticing, factually complete and accurate with solid course information. Youngsters are intrigued by “catchy” or “zany” titles. Your bio should establish your qualifications in terms of experience (more so than credentials or degrees), while being concise and relevant.

TEACHING FOR OTHER LC VALLEY ORGANIZATIONS (i.e., YWCA, WWCC, Lewiston Parks & Recreation, etc.) Please understand that you are free to teach for other LC Valley organizations but we ask that you not offer the same class, for both another organization and LCSC CECE, during Kids’ College sessions.

TEXTBOOKS/HANDOUTS are generally not used in Kids’ College classes. Please indicate the need to order books on your course proposal. Textbooks may also be ordered through the College Bookstore.

BACKGROUND CHECKS will be required of all instructors to ensure the safety of all involved in Kids' College. If your current employer can verify that you have passed a criminal background screening, the additional screening will be waived. If you have had a background check through Continuing Education & Continuing Education office in the past 5 years, it is not necessary to do another one.

PAYROLL FORMS must be completed and returned prior to the first class start date. Federal law requires us to verify citizenship status and eligibility to work in the U.S. Instructors will not be paid until all payroll forms have been submitted correctly to the CECE Office. The necessary forms include: W4, I-9 (with two forms of ID), Direct Deposit and PERSI Verification.

PUBLICITY beyond the CECE publicity schedule and brochure is your responsibility, and must be approved by the CECE office before distribution.
