Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test & Nurse Entrance Test (HOBET/NET)

Your printed report of the NET/HOBET results provides you with information about your performance in the following 7 areas. Please refer to your test report to understand the meaning of the test results and then, in consultation with your advisor, please use the results to optimize your performance and success in the Nursing Program.

1. Essential Math Skills: This is basic arithmetic and algebra considered for success in college and the health care professions. Any score less than 50% is an area of concern and reflects a need for remediation. Examine the back of the report to determine specific areas of math difficulty.

2. Instructional Level: This evaluates reading comprehension at the inferential level for science-related material. Reading selections are at the 10th grade level of difficulty for vocabulary and sentence syntax. This is considered the "normal" adult reading level for applicants in college level courses.

If you scored well on this section, you should have no difficulty reading college level content. If you scored poorly, you will probably have difficulty with assigned science and nursing/radiography readings.

Ranking and Level of Reading Comprehension: to the right of the reading comprehensive percent is your ranking compared to the norm group and the level of reading comprehension ability.

Independent Level - Students at this level should be able to read assigned textbooks without the benefit of lectures. Only college professors generally achieve the Independent Level on this reading profile.

Instructional Level -  Students who score at this level should be able to effectively read assigned textbooks with assistance from faculty lectures.

Frustration Level - Students who score at this level will encounter difficulty in simply reading the textbooks during their college education, especially nursing/radiography and science texts. If you scored in this area, you need assistance to improve your reading comprehension skills.

Reading Rate: This is the words per minute when the student is placed in a test or study situation. The normal reading rate for an adult learner with at least a 10th grade reading ability is between 200 and 450 words.

Reading Rate Placement: This is the reading rate in words per minute reported as a percentile. A percentile of 50 is considered "average." For example, a percentile of 78 suggests that a 78 out of 100 people tested read slower than you did.

Critical Thinking Appraisal: This reflects your ability to critically think while reading. It includes the ability to make inferences, identify the main idea of a passage and to predict outcomes of a situation based on your reading skills.

3. Test-Taking Skills. The NET/HOBET measures ability to utilize test-taking strategies when taking objective, essay and standardized exams.

Independent Level: This level demonstrates sophistication in test-taking skills.

Instructional Level: This level demonstrates acceptable mastery of test-taking strategies. This student would benefit from specific instruction in test-taking skills.

Frustration Level: This level suggests inadequate sophistication when taking objective, essay, and standardized exams. This student will encounter difficulty in successfully taking examinations, especially multiple choice and true/false questions. When taking teacher-made or standardized tests, this student will not accurately demonstrate academic mastery of content.

4. Stress Level. The NET/HOBET assesses our perceived stress level in the areas of personal coping, family life, social life, money/time commitments, academic stress and stress in the workplace. High scores on this profile indicate areas of stress which may cause difficulties or influence performance as stressful. It may be that the student and his/her advisor will choose to discuss these findings and develop problem-solving strategies to help reduce stressful areas.

5. Social Interaction Profile: The inventory provides insight into your passive/aggressive, social interaction skills. Generally, the Passive Score is approximately half of the value of the Aggressive Score. This is for your own information. Faculty are interested in the profile for the group so that teaching-learning activities can be planned to foster group interaction.

6. Learning Styles Inventory: The NET/HOBET assesses your preferred learning style. This includes your preference for conditions that promote your individual learning. Students learn best in a variety of ways.

  • from hearing spoken words (Auditory Learner)

  • seeing words, videos, movies, etc. (Visual Learner)

  • from group interaction and group study (Social Learner)

  • from working alone (Solitary Learner)

  • by being able to verbally explain his/her work (Oral Dependent Learner); and/or

  • by experience (doing) and a combination of stimuli and then organizing thoughts on paper (Writing Independent Learner)

In this section, identify how you learn best. Faculty will use information about your group's learning style in order to plan appropriate teaching activities.

7. Your Composite Score. This is an average of your Essential Math Skills and Reading Comprehension Scores. You should examine your scores under Your Composite Percentage and Your Composite Percentile. These will tell you what you scored and the comparison to the average national norm score.
