Center for Arts and History Named a Winner by City of Lewiston
LEWISTON—When the City of Lewiston’s Historic Preservation Commission
created their new Orchid Award to honor people, companies and public
entities that have done a standout job of restoring their historically
significant buildings, Lewis-Clark State College Foundation Board’s Center
for Arts and History quickly came to the top of the stack.
The Orchid Awards, as well as others honoring beautification and community
service efforts, were presented at a March 11 ceremony at the Red Lion Hotel
in Lewiston.
The building now housing the Center is significant among downtown Lewiston’s
oldest structures. Designed by renowned western architect Kirtland Cutter,
it was built in 1884 and has been a department store and a bank during its
nearly 107 year history. It is on the National Register of Historic Places
and was donated to the LCSC Foundation in 1991 by First Security National
Bank of Idaho. Today it is the site of a wide variety of art exhibits,
cultural presentations and public ceremonies.
Chuck Brown, President of the Foundation Board, accepted the 2002 award for
outstanding preservation of a public building. He stated that “The LCSC
Foundation is honored and we know it is a privilege to be part of this fine
old building’s ongoing presence in our town.”
