wcarroll@lcsc.edu LCSC Offering New Ways to Earn Teacher Certification Want to be a teacher? Lewis-Clark State's Education Division is providing a unique opportunity for people who'd like to share expertise and experience gained in other fields by becoming teachers. In response to the nationwide teacher shortage and requests from the community, the college's education division designed two programs for people interested in an alternative way to earn teacher certification. Both begin in June of this year with summer classes on campus. During the following fall and spring, students will take web courses before returning to campus for a second summer session. Both programs include classroom internships. The elementary education teacher certification program is a summer and distance learning program designed for individuals who have completed two years of college, are employed and interested in teaching at the elementary level (grades K-8). The program culminates with an internship in a grade kindergarten through eigth grade (K-8) classroom. The secondary education teacher certification program is designed for individuals who have a bacheloršs degree and are employed, but looking for a career change and interested in teaching at the secondary education level (grades 6-12). The program culminates in an internship in a grade 6-12 classroom. Although not restricted to them, the programs are especially suited for instructional aides currently employed by a school district. Division chair Jann Hill said her department has received numerous inquiries from aides and others currently working in schools, asking about opportunities to earn certification. In response to these requests, and with an eye toward the looming teacher shortage, the division crafted the alternative programs. Hill noted that, while ideal for current classroom aides, the new certification programs are not limited to just those people. "A lawyer or an accountant could apply as well. We recognize that there are people with skills and experience in other walks of life who could be dedicated, inspiring teachers and we want to offer that opportunity to them," she said. Those who meet admission requirements for the programs will attend an on-campus orientation session on June 10-14, 2002. Following that, they will complete the coursework at their own pace. For most, this will mean being on campus one or two days each semester, combined with learning via the collegešs distance learning technology. The 2002 application deadline to apply for the secondary program is April 1. The elementary program deadline is April 15. Qualified applicants will be admitted to the programs on a first-come, first-serve basis. Because certain core requirements must be met for certification, the division is urging interested persons to have their transcripts evaluated prior to submitting an application. About launching a valuable, exciting new program, Hill said, "The LCSC Education Division is proud to open doors for those who would like to teach."
