Fulbright Program
Offering Awards Around the World
The Fulbright Scholarship Program is again offering awards
in 140 countries around the world. The program’s 2003-2004 catalog lists
over 900 grant opportunities for faculty, administrators, professionals from
the business community and government, artists, journalists, lawyers and
independent scholars, in 37 fields. Faculty and administrators from two-,
four-year and graduate institutions are invited to apply.
The Fulbright Program is billed as the U.S. Government’s flagship exchange
activity. Since its inception in 1946, the program has taken thousands of
academics and professionals around the globe to lecture, consult or conduct
research. Founder Senator William Fulbright viewed the program as “a much
needed vehicle for mutual understanding that would provide the opportunity
for future leaders to observe and better comprehend the institutions,
cultures and societies of other countries and peoples.”
Traditional Fulbright awards range from two months to a full academic year
or longer in length. A new short-term grants program—the Fulbright Senior
Specialists Program—offers two- to six-week grants in several disciplines.
Foreign language skills are needed in some, but not all countries. Most
lecturing assignments are in English.
In addition, three new pilot programs have been added to the traditional
Fulbright Scholar Progam. They are: the Senior Specialists Program mentioned
earlier; the New Century Scholars Program, which will convene an
international group of 30 to 35 top academics to “examine a major
transnational theme and work together on an issue of global significance.”
The third, the Alumni Initiatives Program, is designed to help former
Fulbright recipients “sustain both ongoing contacts and institutional
partnerships” resulting from their experiences abroad.
LCSC business professor, Dr. Gerald Ramey is a Fulbright Scholar currently
working on a project in Romania. His work includes assisting a Romanian
university with teaching management and leadership classes, development of a
university business curriculum, and working with local businesses and
non-profit entities.
