LCSC’s Idaho TRIO AmeriCorps Program
Receives Funding, Seeks Recruits

LEWISTON-Lewis-Clark State College is pleased to announce that their Idaho TRIO AmeriCorps program was granted another year of funding from the Corporation for National Service. Funding has become increasingly competitive this year due to the start-up of the Freedom Corps, President Bush’s volunteer initiative. Out of a pool of 52 applicants, Idaho TRIO AmeriCorps was one of only 8 to be continued for the upcoming program year. This funding is for the third year of a three-year grant cycle.

Recruitment for AmeriCorps members is currently taking place with service opportunities available across Idaho. The upcoming program year runs September 1st, 2002, through August 2003.

Idaho TRIO AmeriCorps is a statewide tutoring/mentoring program in which AmeriCorps members serve at-risk students of all ages. Host sites include public schools, colleges and universities, community based organizations, Head Start programs, state correctional institutions, charter schools, and literacy labs.

Full-time positions (minimum of 1700 hours) provide a member with a living allowance of $9,600 for 12 months, health insurance, childcare assistance if one meets the income criteria, and, upon completion of service, an education award of $4,725. Part-time positions (minimum of 900 hours) provide a member with a living allowance of $5,000 for 12 months and, upon completion of service, an education award of $2,362.

Individuals considering an AmeriCorps position must be over the age of 17, a high school graduate or the equivalent (or willing to obtain a GED while serving in AmeriCorps), and a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States.

Applications are available on the program’s web site at www.lcsc.edu/americorps or by calling the office at 1-800-423-8239. The ITAC office is located in Room 6 of the Administration building of the LCSC campus.
