Nez Perce legislative
candidate at LC
to announce bid for office
LEWISTON - Nez Perce Tribal member Carla Higheagle announced
her intent to run for legislative office this week. She will be on the LCSC
campus Friday, March 29 to formally confirm her democratic candidacy in the
legislative race against incumbent Frank Bruneel.
She is the first Nez Perce woman to run for the Idaho legislature. In
announcing her bid, she cited several concerns, including the legislature’s
treatment of funding for public and higher education and the repeal of term
limits.
Higheagle, 45 and a mother of seven, was born in Lewiston and lives in
Lapwai. She is currently in her second term as a member of the Nez Perce
Tribal Executive Committee, the tribe’s governing body. She notes that her
position on the Executive Committee has no implications related to her run
for the legislature. She describes herself as an individual with an agenda
that includes education, health care and job training, among other topics.
She knows the run against Bruneel will be a tough one. Bruneel, a
Republican, is a veteran politician and the Republican House Majority
Leader. Higheagle also admits the tribe’s occasionally
troubled-relationships with communities in the area may have some impact on
her ability to garner support. Nonetheless, she hopes her concerns are
shared by other Idaho residents who will focus on her agenda and goals as
candidate.
Higheagle will be on campus at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. If the weather permits,
she will speak outside near the fountain and statues west of Reid Centennial
Hall. In the case of inclement weather, the event will take place in the
Student Union Building cafeteria area, near the stage on the south wall.
