President Thomas’ Hopes
Ride High on New Scholarship Fund
LEWISTON—For President Dene Thomas, a most meaningful and important part
of her August 22 investiture will be the unveiling of the LCSC Investiture
Scholarship Fund. This new scholarship fund, conceived, created and
supported by her, is a manifestation of her strong belief in access to
education.
Thomas knows personally about education’s power to change and improve life.
Her path to the high leadership position she will soon celebrate began with
earning a college degree in English while a commuting, single mother of
three. It is her fervent desire that such opportunity be available for all
who need help getting an education.
President Thomas Pauses to talk with a student
With bright eyes she says, “Listen to how beautifully this ancient saying by
the Indian philosopher Shankara conveys the importance of education:
‘Knowledge alone effects emancipation. As fire is indispensable to cooking,
so knowledge is essential to deliverance. ‘ ”
Her goal is to infuse others with her hope and enthusiasm for LCSC and what
it can do for its students so that they will be moved to generously support
her fund. Her dream come true would be to see the fund reach endowed status
on the day of the ceremony.
Says Thomas, “It’s a new day for me, a new day for LCSC and through this
fund and others like it, I want to give a new day to those who cannot access
education without help.”
