LC Professor Receives First Award for Excellence in Diversity

Earlier this year, Lewis-Clark State College President Niel Zimmerman invited nominations for the college's Excellence in Diversity and Cross-Cultural Understanding Award. The award honors those who have made exceptional contributions to advancing multi-cultural understanding at LCSC, and contributing to multicultural recruitment and retention efforts. Schools, community members, college divisions or individual faculty, staff or students were eligible for nomination.

The nomination process included written submissions from peers and co-workers regarding nominees' merit, followed by review by the President's Commission on Diversity, which made subsequent recommendations to Dr. Zimmerman. Nominating guidelines emphasized consideration of individuals or groups who worked for advancement of diversity in three areas: advancing visibility and awareness of diversity and cross-cultural understanding; promoting diversity as a key institutional and community value; and increasing the demographic diversity of the college and community.

The first annual award for Excellence in Diversity was presented to LCSC social sciences professor, Dr. Steve Evans at the college's faculty and staff awards social on Wednesday, May 9th. Dr. Evans will be recognized again during commencement ceremonies on May 8th.

Evans was lauded for his efforts to engage Native American students in college activities, and providing opportunities for students of all nationalities and cultures to learn about Native People-the Nez Perce in particular. He was recognized for expanding curriculum offerings to include Native American History and Nez Perce language, initiating the Native American Club on campus, and has been active on a number of advisory panels related to Native American and minority issues. Evans is an accomplished author, known for his book The Voice of the Old Wolf: Lucullus Virgil McWhorter and the Nez Perce Indians. He helped to develop the Isaac "Ike" Wilson Memorial Scholarship, which he and his wife Connie continue to support.

Evans is a thirty-three year veteran at LCSC and was honored for his service, along with other long-time employees, at the social. He is retiring this year.
