LC Professor to Teach Teachers
about East Asia
Lewis-Clark State College, in collaboration with the National Consortium for Teaching
About Asia and University of Washington’s East Asia Resource Center, is offering a
symposium on learning and teaching about China and Japan during the winter/spring of 2002.
In a time when the United States and, in particular, the Pacific Northwest, has many
associations with the people of these two countries, the information and skills to be
taught in this symposium are increasingly important.
Designed to encourage and facilitate the teaching of this important subject matter in the
K-12 classroom, the symposium will take place February 1-2, March 1-2 and April 1-2 on the
LCSC campus. It is funded by the prestigious Freeman Foundation, which provides funds to
teach teachers, and will cover a range of subjects including history both ancient and
modern; social, philosophical and cultural structures, and current political and economic
conditions in China and Japan.
The 30-hour symposium, to be taught by LCSC Professor of Asian History Marilyn Levine and
other Asian specialists, is open to teachers from northern Idaho and eastern Washington.
It includes possible college credit, stipends, and free materials in addition to materials
for schools.
There will be no charge for attendance but registration is limited to 20 teachers and must
