Contact: Randy Harper, Director Department of Learning Resources - 208-792-2207 Learning Resource Center Serves Record Number of Students as Classes Start The Lewis-Clark State College Learning Resource Center served a record number of students on Wednesday, August 29. Seventy-two student visits were recorded by the end of the day. Since the number of students served by the Learning Resource Center usually builds during a semester, this all-time high daily total will probably be topped as the year progresses. Expectations are high that last year's 6,677 student visits will be far surpassed, long before this year is over. The center comfortably accommodates up to twenty students at any one time. Seven computers are available for student use at the site. The Learning Resource Center is a component of the Department of Learning Services. The department's goal is to support students by providing academic, technical and personal support to students of all ages and backgrounds. Many of the department's programs are geared to helping individuals transitioning into new educational and occupational environments. Director Randy Harper said, "The Center for New Directions, Adult Basic Education Program, Learning Resource Center, the Family Education Program and several other projects are all part of our commitment to making education accessible to everyone throughout life." New students were made aware of the Learning Resource Center and its services during this year's orientation sessions. During orientation, optional workshops that included topics related to "getting the most out of your college education" were filled with students of all ages, looking for success strategies, indicating students are hungry for tips on maximizing their learning experience. Informational sessions regarding the Learning Resource Center specifically are also presented to students in their classrooms at the start of each semester, to promote awareness of the center and the support it provides. However, word-of-mouth has proven to be the most effective means of spreading the news among students about help available through the Learning Resource Center. |
