Warrior Ace Torres Goes to Toronto in 35th Round of MLB Draft
-Avery Ash, Afternoon
News/Sports Anchor, 4K News/KOZE Radio - 208-743-2502
Andy Torres may not cut the most intimidating figure off the mound, but
teammates have said once he takes the hill, there's no better college-level
pitcher anywhere. The Blue Jays have given Torres the opportunity to perfect
his pitches in the Toronto system, making him the 1,046th overall pick of
the 2002 Major League Baseball draft.
The
5'9" righthander earned MVP honors at the NAIA World Series, where he picked
up his third save of the year by allowing just five hits while striking out
four in three innings of work to clinch Lewis-Clark State's 12-8 victory
over Oklahoma City in the championship game. Torres went 2-0 in the
tournament and only gave up one earned run in 19 innings pitched, including
a complete-game performance as LC eliminated Albertson 5-0.
Torres was undefeated in all 10 regular-season starts for the Warriors,
compiling a 2.68 ERA in 111 innings of work. He becomes the fourth LC player
picked in the '02 MLB draft.
