Athletic Department 208/792-2275 President Names Katherine Noble as Athletic Director At a press conference today, Lewis-Clark State College President Dene Kay Thomas announced the appointment of Katherine E. Noble as LCSC's Athletic Director. LCSC has been considering candidates for the position since Dick Hannan's departure to become commissioner of the Great Northwest Conference last month. Gary Hunter, formerly Athletic Director for the University of Idaho and consultant and chief executive officer for Diamond Sports Management, has been filling the role during the interim period. Hunter was not a candidate for the position and is returning to his consulting activities. The process has involved the efforts of a search committee representing a cross-section of the campus and community. Noble emerged as the most qualified candidate in the four-month search process. A Washington State alum, she has a long history in collegiate athletics in the Northwest, including service as the Associate Commissioner with the Big Sky Conference and Associate Athletic Director at the University of Montana at Missoula. She comes to Lewis-Clark State from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she was the Senior Associate Athletic Director. She has friends in collegiate and professional coaches and athletes throughout the country. Her supporters include Jim Livengood, former AD at WSU; Bill Moos, AD at the University of Oregon; Douglas Fullerton of the Big Sky Conference, and Shelia Stearns, president at Wayne State College and former chancellor at Western Montana College. Noble is glad to be returning to the Northwest and said she is "proud to join such a successful athletic program." She will assume her duties as Athletic Director for LCSC in October. Hunter will continue his interim duties during the transition period. The area's quality of life was one reason Noble was interested in the LCSC position: "The community, the college, the people, the activities are all part of a great package," she commented. Friends and colleagues had also shared positive comments about the college's new president and its future under her leadership. Noble was especially impressed with the welcoming atmosphere she found at LCSC. "In the midst of what could have been a grueling, sterile interview session, staff and faculty were warm and congenial . It felt like the start of a friendship," she said. Of the search outcome, President Thomas said she was "pleased that we found someone with so much enthusiasm and with such a strong record-Kathy has a solid background in collegiate athletics and an understanding of the region-Mountain West, Inland Empire, Big Sky and Frontier Conferences." The LCSC Athletic program includes its NAIA champion baseball team, men's and women's basketball, cross country, tennis, golf and rodeo teams, and its women's volleyball team. |
