Connecting past and
present, people with people:
LCSC alumni office seeks missing persons
LEWISTON–While warm
summer days typically mean LCSC students and staff—like most people in the
community—get out to enjoy the many outdoor activities the area has to
offer, the Alumni Relations Office has been hard at work indoors, combing
through old records to find “lost” LCSC alumni.
2002 graduates had barely crossed the podium when Alumni Relations Officer
Linda Cardwell went to work implementing a plan to find information about
former students that had been lost in the transition from handwritten to
computerized file-keeping.
The college maintains a computerized database that includes over 11,000
alums, Cardwell said; however, less than half of those names have up-to-date
information to go with them. That makes it hard to keep in touch with those
people and let them know about LCSC events or news.
In June, Cardwell assembled a team of student workers to sort through old
records stored in the basement of Reid Centennial Hall. They were looking to
update the list of former LC students. The students pored through old files,
crosschecking existing records with what they found. In less than a month’s
time, they found over 1000 alumni not included on the electronic database,
and over 3000 names not ever on the list of LCSC alumni.
Limited funds to cover the effort came by way of savings achieved in the
office of College Advancement. “It’s something we’ve needed to do for a long
time,” Cardwell said. “Part of the appeal of this school for many students
has always been the small, close-knit campus community; we want to provide
ways to continue that connection between people and the college,” she
explained, adding, “We finally had a window of opportunity in which to
address that need and we went for it.”
The search for missing names is just one of the ways the college is seeking
to build a stronger alumni community. In August, alums will get another tool
to keep in touch with each other and their alma mater:
www.LCWarriorMail.com will make
special e-mail accounts available to current and former students. Designed
specially for LC students and alumni, the web site will host sections for
campus news and Headline News©, as well as a campus event calendar.
The valuable service is free and automatically gives student and alumni
users access to e-mail, personal and shared calendars, club and committee
group forming—including document sharing and live chat rooms, and a direct
link to Warrior Web through LCWarriorMail. Users will also
have an address book to store information and e-mail addresses, and online
photo albums to share favorite photographs or graphics.
In the meantime, Cardwell’s team of nine students, working full- and
part-time hours will continue to sort through records over the summer
months. “This is an important step in keeping lines of communication open,”
Cardwell said. “When we’re done, we’ll be better able to help former LCSC
students reconnect with each other and the college.”
