Community, College Welcomes New President

Over 100 faculty, staff, students and community members attended a reception last Friday to welcome Dr. Dene Thomas as LCSC's 14th president.

Thomas, one of four finalists for the position, was named president of the college last month by the State Board of Education. Thomas is a former Vice Provost at the University of Idaho.

LCSC associated student body president Tate Smith said, "The reception was really a lovely welcome. Those in attendance were as excited to meet the new president as I was." Smith added, "It will be exciting to see what's in store for LC."

Thomas personally greeted each of the 100-plus guests attending the reception at the Cnter for Arts and History in downtown Lewiston. Student senator Jennifer Redford said she thought it was great that Thomas took time to talk to each and every person: "She has the personal touch that L-C needs."

LCSC professor Masoud Kazemi said he knows Thomas is an extraordinary person and is really looking forward to working with her. "The future of L-C is going to be excellent with her, I promise," Kazemi said. He added that former students of Thomas' from University of Idaho have specifically mentioned her caring and compassionate spirit.

Deacon Meier, Vice President for Student Affairs said of Thomas, "Her energy and enthusiasm are contagious, she is a good energizer for me and has a lot of good ideas."

Ernie Williams, Director of Student Life, agreed that the atmosphere around Thomas' new presidency is upbeat. "I am really excited about her being here," Williams said.

Thomas will take a three-day "bus" tour to LCSC's outreach centers this week. Accompanied by LCSC representatives, she will travel to the outlying communities served by the college to personally introduce herself and her vision for the future of LC, offering a forum for discussion of the school's role and continuing direction.
