LCSC Names Interim Athletic Director – Search for AD Continues

Lewis-Clark State College today named D. Gary Hunter of Fort Collins, Colorado, as interim director for the school’s athletic program. Dr. Dene Kay Thomas made the official announcement on Monday the 9^th, her first day in the president’s office at LCSC. Hunter is expected to start at LCSC on Monday, July 16. He will serve as interim director until a permanent athletic director is selected.

Hunter comes to the Lewis-Clark valley with a history in athletic program management, including stints as Athletic Director for Wichita State University and the University of Idaho. He also served as Associate and Assistant Director of Athletics for the University of Kansas.

Hunter earned his Jurist Doctorate in Law at the University of Kansas in 1969, after completing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the same school.

In the years following his work as athletic director at Wichita State, Hunter has held a number of titles in athletics administration and development, including: senior executive vice president for the Denver Nuggets/Colorado Avalanche; commissioner and deputy commissioner for the Continental Basketball Association, out of Phoenix Arizona; and managing investor for the Idaho Stampede, a basketball franchise in the Continental Basketball Association. He is currently chief executive officer and consultant to Diamond Sports Management.

The search for athletic director has been open approximately a month, following Dick Hannan’s departure to become commissioner of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference later this month. The college has interviewed just one candidate for the position thus far. Search committee chair Dr. Rita Rice Morris expects the search to remain open until a suitable candidate is identified. “Hunter is not a current or past candidate for the permanent position; rather he is taking on the interim role primarily because of his past association with President Thomas."

“I’m very happy. LCSC is fortunate to have Mr. Hunter’s expertise of during this period; our athletic department will have strong leadership while we continue our search for the next director,” Dr. Thomas said of Hunter’s decision to join LCSC.
