Salmon Corps Educational
and Career Conference
Held on Campus
They represented 9 Indian tribes and the city of Portland;
they came from throughout the states of Idaho, Washington and Oregon; their
focus was enhancing salmon habitats in the Pacific Northwest. They are the
Salmon Corps.
From
May 20-24, LCSC was host to approximately
75 Salmon Corp members as well as about 25 supervisors and staff. They were
here to attend the 5th Annual Education and Career Conference, this year
titled “Reclaim, Restore, Recover: Uplands and Culture on the Columbia
Plateau.”
The visitors, housed in dorms on campus for the week, spent their time
attending a variety of seminars and going on field trips. Subjects included
mock treaty negotiations, hydrology, noxious weeds and college skills; in
the field, time was spent at the Wolf Education and Research Center in
Winchester and in watershed assessment training at Sweetwater.
Hosting the conference was a first for LCSC, according to Bob Sobotta,
Coordinator for Native American and Minority Students. “Attendees really
liked the campus and talked about wanting to return,” he said. Previous
conference sites include Eastern Oregon University in LaGrande, Oregon State
University in Corvallis and Gray’s Harbor Community College in Aberdeen, WA.
The Salmon Corps, an action arm of Americorps’ Earth Conservation Corps, has
the goal of energizing Native American young adults to repair the
disappearing salmon habitats in the Pacific Northwest. Both the salmon and
the young people, many of whom face serious social and economic challenges,
stand to benefit from this.
