Hearing on Student Fees Tomorrow
LEWISTON - Lewis-Clark State students will get a chance to offer testimony
regarding proposed student fee increases at a special hearing on the subject tomorrow.
After presenting student government leaders with a proposal for fees earlier this month,
Vice President for Administrative Services Dean Froehlich scheduled the public hearing for
Tuesday the 19th, at noon in the Library Telecommunications Center on campus, to gather
input on the proposal.
The process began when the Idaho State Board of Education approved an increase in student
fees of up to 12 percent at its November meeting. The state's colleges and universities
were given permission to raise fees to help them cope with dramatic reductions in state
funding that began in 2001 and are projected through 2003.
A student fee increase was one of the few tools administrators had to help avoid making
damaging cuts to programs and personnel. Most of the increase shows up in the
matriculation fee, which goes to general maintenance and operating costs, student services
and institutional support costs.
At the end of February, Lewis-Clark State officials released an official memorandum and
proposal for student fees in fiscal year 2003 to the student body. The proposal called for
an 11.8 percent increase--which amounts to a $151 increase over what a full-time resident
student pays now. Following the hearing, a final proposal by the college will be submitted
for approval by the State Board of Education in April.
Students can call the ASLCSC office at 208-792-2256 for more information, or copies of how
fees break down. A copy of the memorandum to student representatives can be viewed at the
ASLCSC web page: http://www.lcsc.edu/aslcsc/ or
