Volleyball Coach Candidates On
Campus
LEWISTON-Two candidates for the post of coach to Lewis-Clark State's
winning women's volleyball team will be on campus the first week in March. Shawn Sky and
Michelle Haywood will be spending time with the team, athletic department representatives,
college officials and the public on Monday, March 4th, and Wednesday, March 6th,
respectively.
Sky, from Edmonton, Alberta and Haywood, from Plains, Georgia, have full schedules that
conclude with dinner at the President's home. Prior to that, a public reception is slated
for each from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the lobby of Spaulding Hall on Monday and Wednesday.
Sky has eight years experience coaching high school to post-secondary volleyball and
fifteen years of playing experience. He has four years of head coaching experience with
Alberta's Elite Provincial Team Program and five years as head coach and director for the
Northern Alberta Volleyball Club in Edmonton-during which time the club captured
back-to-back National Championships. He is completing a Master of Science Degree in Sports
Psychology at the University of Idaho and has undergraduate degrees in education and
business.
Haywood is currently the head volleyball coach and instructor at Georgia Southwestern
State University, where she also coached the women's fast-pitch softball team. She also
served as the head coach for the women's volleyball team at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt.
Pleasant, the assistant women's volleyball coach at the University of Iowa at Iowa City,
and head coach for the Junior Olympic Volleyball Club also in Iowa City. Haywood earned
her Masters Degree in Physical Education at Georgia Southwestern State, after completing
her Bachelors Degree in Health Promotion at the University of Iowa.
President Dene Thomas said both candidates have expressed strong commitment to education
as the most important aspect of being a student athlete. Lewis-Clark State's talented
Women's Volleyball Team has been on the lookout for a coach since Kip Yoshimura left for a
position at Gonzaga University last year.
The public, students and faculty are invited to attend the receptions for each candidate
on Monday and Wednesday starting at 4:30 p.m., in the first floor lobby of Spaulding Hall.
Spaulding is located adjacent to the Sam Glenn Complex (the round building) on 4th Street
across from 10th Avenue.
