Volunteers Add Much to
Campus Community
Celebrate the American Spirit - VOLUNTEER! " is the theme
for the 29th annual National Volunteer Week, April 21-27, 2002. The purpose
of the Week, established in 1974 by President Richard Nixon, is to recognize
and celebrate the efforts of volunteers at the local, state and national
levels.
The Lewis-Clark State campus is the scene of many acts of volunteerism both
large and small. Why? Because the very nature of the college invites it.
LCSC, being a small institution of higher education, has brought together a
group of people whose efforts are bettering their own futures, the futures
of aspiring people of all ages, and the future of Idaho’s Lewis-Clark
Valley, where the college is located. For the people who work at the
college, feeling a part of something that meaningful and important can bring
out an energy that motivates them to do more than is required, more than
they get paid for. Look around and you’ll notice employees going beyond the
call of duty every day.
These same forces have attracted individuals to work for LCSC without being
employed. The people that give to this degree feel well paid even though the
currency isn’t cold hard cash. They include volunteer members of LCSC
support organizations and even a handful of individuals who actually give
many hours of their time on campus every week.
Everyone knows someone who gives a little or a lot of themselves for the
greater good, both on campus and off. This week, to celebrate and encourage
the volunteer spirit, let’s all say thank you to those who give and pledge
to give more ourselves whenever we can. It is an investment that pays
handsomely.
