Perconti, and Chamber Players are part of new CD

Saxophonist Bill Perconti and the Chamber Players of Lewis-Clark State College have recorded Alan Hovhaness’ “Mountain Under the Sea” on Volume XI of “America’s Millennium Tribute to Adolphe Sax Series II,”

The 14 CD set, which was just released by Arizona University Recordings of Tucson, features a compilation of classical saxophonists and new music from around the world.

The Chamber Players of LCSC include Gary Gemberling, who on this CD plays tam-tam, harpist Kathleen Keyes, vibraphonist Kevin Kovalchik, and timpanist Joel Pals. The group was formed to explore new repertoire for saxophone and mixed chamber ensemble and this is the groups’ first CD.

Gemberling, Music Director at Lewiston High School, performs professionally on trumpet throughout the U.S. and Canada, and was a recent guest artist with the Spokane Symphony. Keyes was the harpist for the Washington-Idaho Symphony and is now studying in Canada. Kovalchik is a student of Dan Bukvich at the University of Idaho, and Pals is the Director of Choirs at Lewiston High School and is also on the faculty in the same capacity at LCSC.

Perconti is a Professor of Music at LCSC. He has recorded with Crystal, Centaur, and Arizona University Records, who nominated his first recording on AUR’s volume II for the 42nd Grammy Awards. Perconti has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and Bossak-Heilbron Foundation of N.Y., and the Washington Artists Trust.

Seattle-based composer Hovhaness (1911-2000) is one of the most popular classical composers of the late 20th century. The title, exotic instrumentation, and Japanese-like melody of “Mountain Under the Sea” represent Hovhaness’s love of non-western music and nature.

Funded by LCSC and supported by Hinako Hovhaness, the selection of “Mountain Under the Sea” on Volume XI by Perconti and the Chamber Players of LCSC is a world-premier recording of the work. The CD series “America’s Millennium Tribute to Adolphe Sax” can be found on AUR’s website, www.AURec.com
