LCSC sets all-time enrollment record
Lewis-Clark State College shattered its all-time enrollment mark with a record 3,612 students enrolled for the 2007 fall semester, according to the college’s 10th day report.
The college continues to show impressive growth and set numerous enrollment records this fall, including highs for freshmen direct out of high school and for minority students.
LCSC’s total enrollment increased a whopping 6.42 percent from a year ago and smashed the old enrollment mark of 3,471 in fall 2003. LCSC also set a record for full-time equivalency at 2,650.
“LCSC is on the move,” LCSC President Dene K. Thomas says. “The campus is an exciting place to be. Students like discovering that they receive a private school education at a public school cost.”
All state schools are required to file 10th-day reports to the State Board of Education. All school enrollment figures are based on the numbers on the 10th day of school. The 10th day of classes at LCSC this fall was Monday, Sept. 10.
The 10th-day report shows LCSC’s direct-from-high school enrollment jumped 9 percent, including a 31 percent increase from Lewiston High School. Also, the number of minority students and international students climbed 9.1 and 8.3 percent, respectively.
“Students are discovering that they are treated like individuals here,” LCSC Dean of Student Services Andy Hanson says. “We prize the individuals and care about them, and they get that from the moment we meet them.”
“LCSC is a ‘Smart Choice,’ ” LCSC Provost J. Anthony Fernandez says, referring to college’s advertising slogan, “and our reputation for high quality, award winning instruction is growing.”
Thomas and Fernandez say LCSC’s selling points of low teacher-to-student ratio, low tuition costs, a highly qualified faculty, and the college’s friendly learning environment all played major roles to help the college see a dramatic enrollment increase this fall when most other institutions in the Pacific Northwest are seeing little to no growth, and in some instances, a decrease in enrollment.
LCSC’s enrollment figures include 101 students direct from Lewiston High School, and 131 enrolled from Asotin County, a 77 percent increase from a year ago.
The college also had sharp increases in international students (143 total) and minority head count (409), which also is a record. Hispanic student enrollment is up 4 percent to an all-time high of 184 students, and African American enrollment also doubled from a year ago.
The Education Division and Natural Science Division both saw a double-digit percentage increase in students this year. The Education Division went up 16.5 percent, while the Natural Science Division is up 12.6 percent. The Business Division, which had an increase of 7.9 percent, is the most popular division on campus for the second straight year with 545 students.
A total of $325,266 was awarded in out-of-state tuition scholarships to 132 students. More than $10.2 million in scholarships, financial aid, and waivers was awarded for the semester.
