Annual Space Day event continues today
The annual Space Days event, which draws approximately 600 sixth-graders from Lewiston and Clarkston, will be held this Thursday and Friday, Nov. 15-16, at the Williams Conference Center on the Lewis-Clark State College campus.
Sixth graders from all four Clarkston public elementary schools, as well as from Asotin, St. Stanislaus, and Holy Family will be at the Space Days event on Thursday, while all seven Lewiston public schools will visit on Friday.
The event allows students to explore concepts in the areas of space science, exploration and technology through a variety of space stations. Students will learn about rockets, gravitational fields, sunlight, color, use of constellations, and the length of day and night throughout the year.
The goal of the event is to help enrich sixth-grade science curriculum by heightening awareness and knowledge of space science and space exploration through hands-on participation.
The event is sponsored by the LCSC Division of Education and the Lewiston School District’s Challenge Enrichment Program.
Under the direction of LCSC Education professor Gary Mayton and associate professor Cliff Matousek, LCSC students who are teacher education interns have designed, created and will facilitate the 15 science stations.
Topics for the space stations include parachutes and drags, martian ice, invisible light and space, inertia, reaction mass, sunlight and color, and craters on the earth.
In addition, the event will feature a guest speaker, Woody Sobey, who is the Education Director of the Discovery Center of Idaho. He will give four presentations on living and moving in space. He will speak to Clarkston students on Thursday morning at the Clarkston High auditorium and to Lewiston students twice on Friday at the LCSC Silverthorne Theatre. He also will talk on Thursday at 6-7 p.m. at the Silverthorne, which is free and open to the general public.
Sobey’s talk will discuss rockets and vacuums in space, and include Newton’s Law of Motion, and examine how the lack of air in space can affect sound, airplanes, and simulated people.
