Employees who travel outside Lewiston should be aware
Storm shuts down schools, roads, courthouses - UI and WSU closed
LEWISTON - A severe winter storm is wreaking havoc in the Inland Northwest. The University of Idaho, WSU and multiple school districts have cancelled classes. The Latah County Courthouse and the Idaho County Courthouse are closed, including all county offices. Moscow City offices closed. Valley Transit and Pullman transit have suspended services.
U.S. 195 between the Idaho state line and Pullman is closed. U.S. 95 at Genesee - whiteout conditions with multiple slideoffs. SR 272 is closed to traffic from Colfax to Palouse. All Asotin County roads in the Anatone, Peola and Cloverland areas are closed. Asotin County closures are expected to continue through the evening.
In Nez Perce County, the Old Spiral Highway, Moser, Hillside and Leon Roads are closed with drifts to 20 feet deep. All Southwick area roads closed except for the Southwick highway. Central Grade is closed due to a mudslide. Chains are advised in the Gifford and Waha areas. Garfield County reports a county-wide whiteout with snowplows recalled.
I-90 at Snoqualmie Pass remains closed in both directions between Ellensburg and North Bend, due to the worst avalanche since 1975. It is unlikely this stretch of I-90 will re-open before tonight. A winter storm warning is in effect for the Palouse until 4:00 p.m. today. Steady snow will continue through this afternoon with areas of blowing snow. A blizzard warning is in effect until 2 p.m. for the Grangeville-Orofino area. Roads in some areas will become impassable due to substantial drifting. Lewiston-Clarkston residents can expect rain and wind today with a high of 42. Travel will be very hazardous in much of the region today. The Idaho State Police request that driving be limited to emergency and essential trips only. All semis are asked to chain up throughout North Idaho.
