Idaho Saxophone Trio releases new CD

The Idaho Saxophone Trio, which includes Lewis-Clark State College music professor Bill Perconti, recently released a CD recording of “Saxophone Trio” by composer Alan Hovhaness.

The recording is included on Volume 14 of the series “America's Millennium Tribute to Adolphe Sax”, a compilation CD set by Arizona University Recordings. The 14 volume series features solo and ensemble concert saxophonists from around the world.

Perconti formed the Idaho Saxophone Trio in 2006 with saxophonists Vanessa Sielert, who is professor of Saxophone at the University of Idaho, and Joy Atkin of Lewiston. Their first CD was released in early 2008 on the AUR Millennium series, vol. 13; which featured their world-premier recording of H. Cowell's “60.” That was the first classical saxophone trio recording of the original music. The Idaho Saxophone Trio also performed in the spring of 2008 at the Region I Conference of the American Saxophone Alliance at WSU.

Hovhaness was an American composer from Seattle and one of the first Western composers who embraced the non-Western music of Asia, Eastern Europe, and India. Nature and spirituality also figured heavily in his music. His “Saxophone Trio” was influenced by Armenian and Indian folk music.

The Idaho Saxophone Trio recordings can be found on AUR's website, www.AURec.com .
