Documentary film on Wood will be Sept. 17

A documentary film on the life of Charles Erskine Scott Wood will be screened on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in Gallery II at the Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History, located at 415 Main St. in Lewiston.

The event is free and open to the public.

Laurence Cotton, who made the film called “C.E.S. Wood,” will introduce his work and following the screening, he will answer any questions from the audience.

Wood was thought of as a true Renaissance man whose life and career bridged the 19th and 20th centuries. As a young West Point graduate, Lt. Wood traveled west, first to engage in Alaskan adventures, and then to fight in the Nez Perce War of 1877. The heart of the documentary tells the story of Wood’s experiences in that campaign, his role in recording Chief Joseph’s famous speech at the war’s end, and his subsequent friendship with Joseph. That friendship molded the friendship that continues today between the Wood family and the Nez Perce Tribe.

After leaving the U.S. Army and obtaining a law degree, Wood settled in Portland and became a larger than life figure in the life of the young city. Woods was a poet, essayist, painter, patron of the arts, civic leader, free speech advocate and defender of radical activists. He also also played a key role in creating some of Portland's major institutions, such as the first library and the Portland Art Museum.
