LCSC uses Stinson Stomp to defeat Great Falls
It’s called the “Stinson Stomp” and with it, the Lewis-Clark State College women’s volleyball team went old school to defeat the University of Great Falls 25-19, 25-21, 25-16 in a Frontier Conference match at the LCSC Activity Center on Saturday afternoon.
After a somewhat flat performance in a three-game sweep of Montana State-Northern on Thursday, second-year LCSC coach Jennifer Greeny (nee Stinson) showed the Warriors some videotape of her playing days at Washington State University when the Cougars were nationally ranked. Those teams, Greeny said, played with a lot of emotion on the court, something she wanted to see in the Warriors.
“I did show them video of my playing days and the Stinson Stomp,” Greeny said about a celebration she did following a WSU point in a match. “It was fun, but that’s what this game should be, fun. You should have fun out on the court and be excited to play.”
After the Warriors’ first point of the match, the players on the court did the Stinson Stomp and kept that energy throughout. A key point in the match came during Game 2 when Great Falls rallied to cut LCSC’s lead to 23-21. Warrior sophomore Katie Hinrichs made a diving dig on a ball that eventually led to a Warrior point.
“I absolutely loved the level of energy we played with,” Greeny said. “We talked all week about good things will come when you lay out all your energy on the court.”
The win moves the Warriors, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA to 23-1 overall and 10-1 in conference play, while Great Falls slips to 12-11 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
Great Falls scored the first point of the match, but the Warriors tied it on a block by Dani Barrett and Anile Clemente, and did the one-foot stomp on the floor, called the “Stinson Stomp.”
“It’s here to stay,” senior Austyn Lewis said.
The Warriors used a 9-2 run midway through the first game to turn a 12-11 advantage into a 21-13 lead. Clemente had two kills during the run, while Lisa Davis added a service ace.
LCSC trailed 9-6 in the second game, but rallied to take a 20-17 lead. Great Falls cut the lead to one, but Hinrichs’ save kept the Warriors ahead. A kill by Lewis then ended the game.
In the final game, LCSC led 13-11 when it went on a 7-1 run for a 20-12 lead. Great Falls never got closer than six the rest of the way.
The win gave LCSC a perfect 10-0 record at home this season and all 10 have been in three-game sweeps.
Clemente again led the Warriors with 14 kills and hit .500 for the match, while Lauryn Herrick added six kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Julie Maciboba also had six kills.
“That’s more the team we know,” Greeny said. “Our blocking was fantastic. They have some hard hitters and the mix it up, but defensively we played well. And our outside hitters had no hitting errors.”
“I think today we went to the court and just wanted to have fun and no regrets,” said Clemente, who added three service aces and 13 digs.
Lisa Davis had 18 assists to pace LCSC, while Maciboba added two service aces. As a team, LCSC finished with eight aces. Lindsay Scott had a match-high 16 digs and LCSC was credited with seven blocks and a .316 hitting percentage, compared to one block and a .164 percentage for Great Falls.
Tosha Nunes and Chelsie Cameron had 10 kills apiece for the Argonauts, while Kari Schiller had 12 digs.
The Warriors play their final regular-season home match on Friday at 7 p.m. against Westminster. Because it’s Halloween, all children who come to the match in costumes will receive free candy.
