Dental Hygiene students to help local dentist

Students in the Dental Hygiene program offered through Lewis-Clark State College will assist Clarkston dentist Robin Henderson in helping 24 Grantham Elementary school children from low-income/uninsured families receive dental care on “National Give Kids a Smile Day” on Feb. 6 at 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Henderson’s office, located at 625 6th St.

The 24 students have been referred to Henderson by Grantham Elementary administrators. Henderson, her staff, and the LCSC students will volunteer their times and services for radiographs, cleaning, sealants, restorative care and most other necessary dental treatment. The elementary students also will be taught proper brushing techniques and the importance of oral health.

The Dental Hygiene program is offered at LCSC through Lane Community College in Oregon. This is the first year of the two-year associate’s degree program and is funded by a grant.

The five first-year students in the program are Dessa Witters, Sarah Fowler, Abbie Farrell, Melinda Stowers, and Amanda Todhunter. The instructor is Vonni Mulrony.

The event is also part of the National Children’s Dental Health Care month, which turns 60 in February. Since 1949, the American Dental Association has sponsored the month to help raise awareness about the importance of oral health.
