Venue change for McIlwain's talk
Charlton McIlwain, a professor of media, culture and communication at New York University, will discuss “A New Conversation About Race: The 2008 Election, President Obama and the Future of American Race Relations?” on March 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 100 of Meriwether-Lewis Hall on the Lewis-Clark State College campus.
The event, which is part of the LCSC Humanities Division’s Visiting Scholar program, is free and open to the public.
McIlwain will serve as the 2008 Visiting Scholar on March 23-24 at the college and will conduct a series of classes and presentations for LCSC faculty and students during that time. His visit is made possible through a generous donation from the Rosehill Estate.
McIlwain tackles many relevant issues in his research writing and teaching, such as race and political campaigns, the language and images of race, and representations of race in news media. Before teaching, he worked as a communications director for congressional and gubernatorial campaigns and in the same capacity for a state political party organization.
He publishes in academic journals, on the opinion pages of American newspapers, and a regular blog. He is quoted regularly in the media and has appeared on national and international television and radio shows.
McIlwain’s current research focuses on the use of racial appeals in political communication, including the construction of racial appeals in language and visual images; the effects of racial appeals on public opinion and voting behavior; framing and priming effects of race in various media; and the experiences of minority political candidates. His other work has focused on issues of death and dying in everyday life and popular culture. He is also interested in the philosophy of communication and research methods.
McIlwain also is part of The Project on Race in Political Communications group, which is designed for students, scholars, educators, politicians and media members who are interested in learning more about the results of combining race, politics and language.
