LCSC Research Symposium is May 6-8
The third annual Lewis-Clark State College Research Symposium will be held May 6-8 at both the Williams Conference Center and the Student Union Building on the LCSC campus.
The Symposium will feature six keynote presentations and 132 student poster and break-out sessions. This year, presenting students can be of other academic standing than a senior.
The public is invited to the free event and there will be free parking on the LCSC campus during that time. Food and drinks also will be available.
Four student manuscripts have been accepted after blind peer review and are currently being edited for the online journal
Brian Christenson, associate professor in the Social Science Division and the Faculty Association Chair, again put the Symposium together.

Keynote Speakers 2009
Wednesday May 6th
Dr. Alan Marshall
Title of Keynote Address: Niimiipuu Studies: From Basic Research to Applied Anthropology
Biography: Professor Marshall earned his Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Washington State University (Pullman, WA) in 1977 for ethnographic research with members of the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho. His dissertation, Nez Perce Social Groups: An Ecological Interpretation, described the interaction of Nez Perce families with their landscapes. After working at North Dakota State University and Boise State University, he joined the faculty at Lewis-Clark State College (Lewiston, ID) in 1979. He is currently Professor of Anthropology in the Social Sciences faculty. His work focuses on the relationship between human groups and their environments. Recent work includes providing written and oral testimony regarding Nez Perce water rights in the Snake River Basin Adjudication; land issues in Wallowa County, Oregon; and hunting rights cases. Recent publications include "Fish, Water, and Nez Perce Life" Idaho Law Review 42 (3): 763-793 (2006);"Socrates Meets Two Coyotes" Journal of Philosophical Research 25: 459-469 (co-author: Kurt Torell) (2000); and "Unusual Gardens: The Nez Perce and Wild Horticulture on the Eastern Columbia Plateau," in Northwest Lands and Peoples: An Environmental History. Dr. Chris Riggs & Dr. Eric Martin
Title of Keynote Address: The Promise and Perils of History Research on the Web Biography: Dr. Chris Riggs holds a Ph.D. In History from the University of Colorado at Boulder. His specializations include United States History and Native American History and Policy. His has published in the American Indian Culture and Research Journal and the Pacific Historical Review. He is the Coordinator for the Social Sciences Major Program and has taught at LCSC in the Social Sciences Division since 2001. Biography: Dr. Eric Martin holds a Ph.D. In History from Northeastern University. His areas of specialization include World History, Anti-Colonialism, and African History. He co-edits the H-World electronic discussion list and his most recent articles have appeared in World History Connected. He has taught at LCSC in the Social Sciences Division since 2002.

Dr. Heather Van Mullem & Alyson Peck
Title of Keynote Address: Content Analysis of Images on Media Guide

Biography: Dr. Heather Van Mullem is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Education, Health and Kinesiology Program at Lewis-Clark State College. She has served as a Health & Kinesiology faculty member for four years, beginning in 2005. Dr. Van Mullem has a Ph.D. in Education: Sport Studies with an emphasis in the Psychology and Sociology of Sport (2005) and a graduate certificate in Women’s Studies (2003) from the University of Kansas, a MS in Kinesiology from Humboldt State University (2001), and a BS in Physical Education from Eastern Washington University (1999). Dr. Van Mullem’s academic research interests concern gender issues in sport.
Biography: Alyson Peck is a senior in the Sport Administration degree program at Lewis-Clark State College. A student-athlete, Ms. Peck is in her fourth year of competition for the LCSC tennis team. She plans to pursue a job in the area of health and fitness.
Ms. Nikol Luther & Mr. Octavio Ambriz, Jr.
Title of Keynote Address: The Ultimate Catch: Strengthening LC’s Advising and Retention Net
Biography: Nikol Luther is the Associate Director of Career & Advising Services at Lewis-Clark State College. She was the Business Division’s Program Advisor for two years and also taught Business Communication as an adjunct faculty member. She has taught Basic English, College Writing, and Research Writing at the University of Idaho, Walla Walla Community College, and Lewis-Clark State College. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Idaho, and her bachelor’s degree in English from Lewis-Clark State College. She is a member of the National Academic Advising Association, and recently presented at their regional conference.
Biography: Octavio Ambriz, Jr. will graduate this year from Lewis-Clark State College with a bachelor’s in Business Administration and a Marketing minor. He is the oldest of five children and is the first generation of his family to attend college. He came to Lewiston on the College Assistance Migrant Program or CAMP scholarship in the fall of 2004 from the small town of Rupert, Idaho. During his college career he has been involved with the AmeriCorps Escort program, Student Business Organization, the Organization of Latin American Students, Intramurals, Outdoor Recreation, Ambassador Honor Society, and student government. He is currently a resident assistant at College Place, and project manager of the 2009 CAMP Alumni Graduation Ceremony.

Dr. Patricia Keith and 14 students
Title of Keynote Address: Interdisciplinary Studies in Hells Canyon
Biography: Patricia Keith began seriously studying Hells Canyon over 10 years ago when, in collaboration with historian Carole Simon-Smolinski, she produced a video documentary on the early 20th century mining operation at Eureka Bar. In 2005, she lived in the Canyon for one month as a Forest Service volunteer. Currently she is completing a documentary on homesteading and ranching in the Canyon—again in collaboration with Carole. This year she directed the first Hells Canyon Institute Field School.
Dr. Paul Buckley
Title of Keynote Address: Chemistry “Magic” as a Teaching Tool for General Chemistry
Biography: Dr. Buckley has taught General Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry at LCSC since 2004. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1993, and did his undergraduate work at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. In addition to holding a teaching position at Hartwick College in New York State for five years, Paul has also been employed as a research chemist for Phillips Petroleum in Oklahoma, as an auditor of state-certified environmental laboratories for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and as an instructor and analyst at the WSU Nuclear Radiation Center.
