LCSC to see record number of graduates on Friday
Lewis-Clark State College will hand out 634 degrees and certificates to 609 students, both all-time records during the college’s 116-year history, during its commencement ceremony on Friday night at the LCSC Activity Center.
LCSC’s commencement program will begin at 6 p.m., and the event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 4 p.m. and seating is open except for a small area reserved for special guests. There also is an area set up for wheelchairs next to the gymnasium floor. The program also is being webcast live on LCSC’s web site.
The 609 graduates and 634 degrees marks the first time LCSC has topped 600 in both categories. The previous graduate record was two years ago when LCSC has 567 graduates. Last year, LCSC had its fourth-largest class at 539 graduates and 560 degrees.
Amber Zornes of Lewiston is earning a Bachelor of Applied Science in both Medical Assistant and Medical Office, a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, and a certification in Medical Biller/Coder. We have 16 students earning two degrees/certificates, three earning three degree/certificates and Zornes who is earning four.
The Border Highlanders Pipes and Drums will lead the commencement processional. Mellissa Stockdill, a student at LCSC, will sing the “National Anthem.”
LCSC President Dene K. Thomas will welcome guests, including Paul Agidius, the president of the Idaho State Board of Education. Thomas will be the main speaker at commencement, while Brian Christenson, chair of the LCSC Faculty Association, Brock Astle, LCSC’s student body president, and Judi Wutzke, president of the Alumni Association, will give short greetings.
Awards will be handed out during the commencement. Former Idaho Legislator Mike Mitchell of Lewiston will receive President’s Medallions, awarded to those who have significantly impacted the college by demonstrating high personal standards, commitment to life-long learning, and personal growth.
Cindy Carter, who worked at LCSC for more than 20 years, will receive the President’s Award for Excellence in Diversity and Cross-Cultural Understanding. The award honors someone who contributes to a heightened understanding of the value of diversity at LCSC and in area communities.
Emeritus status will be awarded to four retiring individuals – Business professor John Haehl, Technical and Industrial Professor Carl Brood, Humanities instructors Rita McAdoo and Roberto Wagne, and Mathematics and Computer Science professor Mike Vernon.
Following the commencement exercise, the LCSC Alumni Association will hold a free reception for graduates, families, friends and alumni at the Student Union Building. Brownies, cookies, and refreshments will be served.
