LCSC to hand out record 638 degrees and certificates
Lewis-Clark State College will hand out a record 638 degrees and certificates to 595 students during its commencement ceremony on Friday night at the LCSC Activity Center.
LCSC's commencement program will begin at 6 p.m., and the event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 4 p.m. and seating is open except for a small area reserved for special guests. There also is an area set up for wheelchairs next to the gymnasium floor.

The 638 degrees and certificates are an all-time record in the 117-year history of the college and mark the second straight year LCSC has topped 600 in both categories. The 595 graduates is the second-highest total to the record of 609 last year.
One student, Camie Huntley of Grangeville, will receive four degrees and certificates tonight. She is earning a Bachelor of Applied Science and an Associate of Applied Science in Business Management and certificates in Retailing and Supervision.
The Border Highlanders Pipes and Drums will lead the commencement processional. Mellissa Stockdill, a student at LCSC, will sing the "National Anthem."
LCSC President Dene K. Thomas will welcome guests, including Paul Agidius, the president of the Idaho State Board of Education. Thomas will be the main speaker at commencement, while Joni Mina, chair of the LCSC Faculty Association, Clay Long, LCSC's student body president, and Don Montgomery, president of the LCSC Alumni Association, will give short greetings.
Awards will be handed out during the commencement. The late Carol Grende and her husband David Carmona will receive the President’s Medallion for their contributions to the LCSC campus. Grende created the statue "Sacajawea's Arduous Journey" that is in front of Sacajawea Hall.
Rhett Diessner, a Social Science professor at LCSC, will receive the President's Award for Excellence in Diversity and Cross-Cultural Understanding. The award honors someone who contributes to a heightened understanding of the value of diversity at LCSC and in area communities.
Emeritus status will be awarded to two retiring faculty members - Humanities professor Patricia Keith and Social Science professor Alan Marshall.
Following the commencement exercise, the LCSC Alumni Association will hold a free reception for graduates, families, friends and alumni at the Student Union Building. Brownies, cookies, and refreshments will be served.
