ISBDC sets June and July workshops

The Region II Idaho Small Business Development Center at Lewis-Clark State College is holding six workshops during the next two months, including ones on "How to Start a Business Boot Camp" and "How to Mind Your Own Business."

There are two workshops in June. The first is June 7 on "How to Start a Business Boot Camp." This workshop will cover business feasibility, self-employment assessment, initial market research, start-up expenses, financial feasibility, choosing a business structure, obtaining finance, determining regulations, setting prices, creating marketing materials, and developing a business plan. The instructor is Jill Thomas-Jorgenson and the workshop fee is $15. The workshop will be held 6-8 p.m. in Sacajawea Hall room 144 on the LCSC campus.

The second workshop in June is June 14-17 at 8 a.m.-noon on the LCSC campus and is for kids aged 9-12 who think starting a business would be fun. The workshop is called "Mind Your Own Business Kids College." The four-day 16-hour course is designed for children age 9-12 and will focus on what it takes to start a business in the areas of management, marketing and financial management, and crucial elements in developing a successful small business venture. Thomas-Jorgenson will be the instructor and the fee is $50.

July's workshops feature two QuickBooks classes. The first is "QuickBooks - Getting Started" and will be held July 7 at 5:30-8:30 p.m. in room 122 of the Sam Glenn Complex on the LCSC campus. The class will teach the basics of QuickBooks, including how to set up a company, work with lists, bank accounts, credit card transactions, and balance sheet accounts. The class has a $50 fee.

The second workshop is "QuickBooks - Accounts Payable, Receivable and Other Record Keeping" on July 8 at the same location and time as the first QuickBooks class. It also has a $50 fee and will be taught by Judy Schumacher. This class will cover the basic setup of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other record keeping in QuickBooks. It will also cover how to enter sales, receive payments, make deposits, enter and pay bills, set up inventory, track and pay sales tax and review reports.

Two more workshops will be held in July. "How to write a Business Plan" is July 9 at 9 a.m.-noon in room 136 of Activity Center West on the LCSC campus and has a $15 fee. It will discuss how to develop a business plan that can be used as a financing tool, a way to show employees a vision for the business, a presentation took to hook potential investors, a study to help determine the feasibility of a business idea, and/or as a road map to grow the business.

The other workshop is "Mind Your Own Business" on July 24 at 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Orofino Outreach Center, located at 2200 Michigan Ave. in Orofino. It is for children age 9-12 and will discuss youth entrepreneurship, which includes babysitting, lawn mowing and walking pets. The workshop will show how to start their own small business and make it successful.
