Students get crime scene training on Friday
TRiO college students throughout Idaho will get a first-hand look at how FBI and the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office handle crime scenes during a two-day TRiO Student Leadership Conference on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25 on the Lewis-Clark State College campus.
TRiO is a federal outreach and student services program designed to identify and provide services for college students from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRiO includes eight programs that are targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first generation college students, and students with disabilities. The program helps those students process through the academic pipeline from middle school to graduate degree programs.
More than 105 TRiO students and advisors from higher education institutions in Idaho have pre-registered for the conference.
The two-day event kicks off Friday at 9 a.m. with check in at the Williams Conference Center at LCSC, followed by a 15-minute presentation on "Ordinary People doing Extraordinary Things." Georgia Lenzmeier with the Clarkston School District will then give a welcome address/ice-breaker.
Following a break, a Forensics and Crime Scene Investigation workshop by FBI agents in Coeur d'Alene and the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office will give an introduction to Forensic Science at 10:45 a.m. Following lunch, a second Forensic Science workshop will be held at 1 p.m. that will include a mobile crime scene investigation. Students will then be put into teams and will put into use what they just learned to investigate a set-up crime scene. The teams will review their findings and then present them on Saturday.
The four stages of a simulated crime scene the students will investigate start with an armed robbery/shooting incident where students will observe shell casings and fake blood stains, and they must also take pictures of the crime scene. They also must take fingerprints off a door know and possible boot prints from the scene. After simulated lab results are returned, participants will execute a search warrant. Participants waiting to take part in the exercise also will see displays of SWAT gear and be briefed on the capabilities and equipment in the mobile crime scene trailer.
A campus tour and a dinner at the LCSC Activity Center will be held Friday afternoon and evening.
On Saturday, the day begins at 9 a.m. with the teams finalizing their findings and then making presentations. After lunch and a raffle, TRiO students will have the opportunity to take part in a Community Service Project and help clean up and do other work at the Jackson Baldwin Falls, located just northwest of the Red Lion Hotel in Lewiston. The conference then adjourns at 3 p.m.
