LCSC plans events for Idaho Human Rights Day
A day of service and a rendition of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech by the Rev. Happy Watkins of Spokane highlight events to celebrate Idaho Human Rights Day on the Lewis-Clark State College campus on Monday.
In honor of King, the Lewis-Clark Service Corps at LCSC is inviting the public to join LCSC students, faculty, and staff to serve those in need on Monday with a service event.
Anyone interested in participating is asked to be at the LCSC Williams Conference Center at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. Following a speech from local motivational speaker Durbin Davis and free refreshments, volunteers will be assigned to a service project to participate in. The projects include help at the a paint project at the Willow Center Inc. for Grieving Children, reading to residents of Wedgewood Terrace, walking dogs at the Humane Society, stocking shelves at the Lewiston Food Bank, an various projects with the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute, the Jack O'Connor Center, and the Heritage House.
Volunteers also will be going door-to-door to promote sustainability and handing out reusable shopping bags that contain an energy efficient light bulb donated by Avista.
The projects will wrap up around 4 p.m. and volunteers are then invited to return to the Williams Conference Center for a chili dinner.
The annual Valley candlelight procession to kick off the evening program will begin at 6 p.m. at the LCSC Amphitheater on the east side of the Student Union Building. The procession will end at the LCSC Activity Center where Watkins, from New Hope Baptist Church in Spokane, will give his rendition of King's famous speech. The Sesitshaya Marimba Ensemble will perform African and Caribbean music following the speech. The evening event also is free and open to the public.
