Seattle artist Schuldt will have work on display at Center
Seattle artist Scott Schuldt will have his exhibition "The Wilderness Within" on display July 15-Oct. 7 at the Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History, located at 415 Main St. in Lewiston.
An opening reception on July 15 at 6-8 p.m. at the Center will kick off the exhibit. Schuldt will be on hand to speak about his work.
Schuldt is an interdisciplinary artist and works in a wide variety of themes. These include - nature and natural sciences, politics, history and archaeology.
"The Wilderness Within" is a multi-media exhibition of work that documents and examines nature and the impact of man on nature through the eyes of the artist. The images, maps and video show a wilderness that lies well inside the boundaries of a major urban area, a place where nature constantly tries to correct and repair the results of "progress". The work not only presents a personal geography but also a personal science, not cutting edge, but science never the less. It documents the creation of a personal wilderness where common sense says there is none.
"While my artwork often appears to be carefully planned, I actually tend to work intuitively, one design element at time," said Schuldt, who is a self-taught artist. "From an initial concept I will research the idea and gather a mass of ideas and visual images until I am sure that I can work a piece to completion. At that point I, most likely, will continue with research, living with and documenting my learning experience in the artwork, and hopefully, just hanging on for dear life as it progresses. My video work is contemplative spoken word observations and reflections with supporting video, photography and sound effects.
"My artworks tend to be labor intensive whether in the construction method or the gathering of information and materials. Since 2008, I have been creating a multi-media artistic documentation in video, photography, maps and sculpture, 'The View from the Canoe', which focuses on altered waterways and man's relationship with nature."
The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday at 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and admission is free, but donations are accepted.
