Panel discussion on domestic violence is Oct. 26

A panel discussion on domestic violence will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at noon at the Lewis-Clark State College Student Union Building Solarium.

The discussion, which is "How Can I Help: Community and College Resources for Friends and Family of Domestic Violence Victims", is free and open to the public.

The panelists include Cheryl Jurgens, a Social Work professor at LCSC, Karrie Smith, Director of Advocacy for the YWCA in Lewiston, Lacey Travis, a survivor of domestic violence, Heidi Benjamin, a counselor in LCSC's Student Counseling Center, and Brandon Hopple of the Lewiston Police Department.

The goal of the discussion is to provide information for friends and families of domestic violence victims as well as for the victims themselves. Studies have shown about one in every four women will be physically or sexually assaulted by a partner during her life. The discussion will show how friends and families can get help for these victims because there are numerous resources at LCSC and in the community.

The event is being sponsored by the Lewiston-Clarkston YWCA, the LCSC Social Sciences Division, Student Life Commission and the Gay-Straight Alliance.
