Multi-cultural historian to deliver lecture at LCSC
LEWISTON, Idaho - Betti VanEpps-Taylor, an independent scholar, writer, lecturer and historian specializing in the multi-cultural history of the Northern Great Plains and American West, will visit the campus of Lewis-Clark State College on Thursday, March 1 for a lecture entitled "Hiding in Plain Sight: African Americans in the American West 1802-1880."
According to VanEpps-Taylor, the first African American to experience the West was "York", William Clark's personal slave. Although many have been forgotten, others' stories can be found in literature that often considered race irrelevant. This presentation touches on the lives of Jim Beckwourth, Ed Rose and others who followed the fur trade; Isaiah Dorman, who died at the Battle of Big Horn; George Bush, who went on to successfully settle in Washington state; and others who tasted freedom in temporary jobs on the forts.
The lecture, presented by the Lewis-Clark State College Presiden's Commission on Diversity, is sponsored by the Idaho Humanities Council. It will take place at 7 p.m. in Sacajawea Hall Room 115 and is free and open to the public.
