Downtown LCSC buildings evacuated Monday after explosion, fire near Lewiston Tribune

A gas line rupture Monday in downtown Lewiston near the Lewiston Tribune building resulted in an explosion and fire, leading to the evacuation of a number of buildings, including the LCSC Center for Arts & History, the Adult Learning Center and Clearwater Hall.

The explosion and fire were reported around 1:30 p.m. There were no initial reports of injuries. All three LCSC buildings were evacuated as a precaution. Power was also knocked out at all the buildings, but restored within two hours.

A plan was implemented to use the LCSC Student Union Building to house anyone from Clearwater Hall who needed shelter, but only a handful of residents were in the dorm and none requested shelter.

The Lewiston Tribune reports that the gas line rupture was caused by excavation work being done for the 5th Street Upgrade project.
