September 7Although the warriors started the season without everyone running, the results from Idaho's meet are exciting and encouraging. Our women's team was shunned in the first NAIA national poll, even though we are a stronger team than last year. A team that peaked in the rankings at #13 and finished the year at #25. Based on the results from this meet and the fact that some key runners were missing, it is hard to believe that the Warriors won't be in the polls next week. The men also gave indications that they deserve national attention, but will probably take running on an 8K course against known opponents before we can expect to see them in the polls.
On a great weather condition day, the women started racing with only 5 of the 10 girls on the team entered in the race. By the time the dust had settled Freshman Tausha Kusmic had finished 2nd overall in a blistering time of 15:09 over the 4000 meter gruelling course. The only girl in front of her was Everlyn Lagat of WSU who ran last year at Malone College and is the NAIA defending XC national champion. Not too far behind was Emma Linehan, whose time would be the 4th fastest time ever run by a warrior at this meet. Rounding it out for the warriors, all with personal bests on this course, were Lauren Wright, Lisa Panian and Hillary Buettner. It should be noted that the average time of the women's team this year was over 20 seconds faster than last years.
The men's team ran strong as well. With 6 of our 7 runners in the field we got a good idea of the potential that this team has. Excitingly, the men's team showed an improvement of over 40 seconds per runner compared to last year's first 5 finishers and everyone that ran this course before showed significant improvements in time. The men were led by a trio of runner with Joe Donnellon finishing in 10th, Chris Patterson in 13th and Jeff Collins in 16th. Rounding it out for the warriors were Ben Anderson, Nick Niemeyer and Nick Rynearson.
Next weekend we travel to Walla Walla, Washington to compete in the Whitman Invitational. We will be hopefully running everyone next week, although a few people will still be at 80-90%.
