Classified Staff Organization
December 3, 2002
Invited Guests:
Patty Leonard introduced Carmen Rahm, Director of Information Technology who gave us an overview of changes in technology on campus. Rahm explained one of his goals when he accepted the position was to improve internal and external communications on campus. We have all benefited from his efforts. Rahm revealed WarriorMail is hosted by an off-campus server and is not campus based. The tabs at the top of the LCSC intranet page are quick links to campus organizational charts, budget books, and departments. If you have not already done so, take a few minutes to review the many options offered. Technology upgrades have been in progress campus-wide. Wireless networking is still in process. Rahm also wanted to make us aware of the fact laptops are available in the SUB for students to checkout. Rahm concluded his presentation by saying he is looking forward to the CSO’s Silent Auction next spring.
Lori Gaskill explained the classified hiring process. Classified staff guidelines, procedures, etc., mirror those of the State’s Human Resources in Boise. Applying for a place on the state register is easier now than in the past as it can be done on-line and there are fewer tests. Applicants for open positions, hired off the state register, have a six-month probation period. The eight-month temp must be on the state register by the end of the eighth month to be hired full-time or the temp will be laid off. When a classified position opens, the position is not necessarily posted internally first then externally. Sometimes that can be simultaneous. However, it is always posted internally. The position is advertised locally or as necessary. Periodic audits of PDQs for specific classifications are done. Reclassification of a position: if PDQ supports reclassification then a personnel action form is prepared. Anyone (employer or employee) can request a reclassification or classification by completing the PDQ process.
Approval of Minutes: Minutes from the September 20th meeting were approved.
New Classified Staff: Vikki Swift gave us a list of people who are new hires or received promotions and/or transfers.
Professional Development Day is planned for April 25, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Professional Staff Organization has agreed to work with CSO and co-sponsor the day. LCSC Office & Business Technology staff has volunteered their time to present workshops on Team Building, Time Management, Customer Service and Human Relations. Cost per person has not been determined but reduced rate will be given to LCSC employees and students. Planning Committee will meet Tuesday, December 10, 3:30 to 4:30 in SUB 141. Everyone is welcome to join the Planning Committee and any of the subcommittees.
Committee Updates:
Employee Recognition: Laura Moyer reported CSO has donated $200 to the Moss Fund. A Silent Auction is planned for the end of February. Now is the time to start getting donations for the auction. If you have any items or have suggestions for getting items, please let Laura know (ext 2295). Artwork, tools, services, etc., are excellent items for the auction. Last year we made over $1000 on the auction.
Julie Hartwig will cater the CSO Social this April—either the 16, 17, or 18. The date will be set later. All CSO members are encouraged to come.
Campus Service/Employee Welfare: Laura Wilson announced $760 worth of donations have been received for LCSC Santa’s Helper fund. Tri-State Corp has given 25 gift certificates and Happy Day Corp has given cards. One or two more families may be added as we have fewer families this year than last. If you want to donate, contact Janell Miller at ext 2239 or Laura ext. 2256).
Campus Holiday Party:
The Campus Holiday Party is December 13. RSVP by December 4. The party follows the same format as last year with dinner, dance lessons, dancing and gambling. Bingo has been added this year. The charge is $20 per couple or $12.50 per single.
Staff Computer Classes:
Dawn Byers will send out an email asking for input on what training classes are needed. Last year Dawn gave Excel classes. Suggestions might include Power Point, Access, Publisher, Pagemaker, etc. Classes do not have to be computer based. Since classes fill fast, Classified Staff members will have priority over Professional Staff member.
By-laws voting results/comments:
All changes to the by-laws passed except the name change for CSO. The group felt more information was needed before approval could be given to change our name. Patty is working on follow-up information for our next meeting.

LCSC Strategic Planning Information - (FY'04)
As part of the Phase I process, units across the college have completed their Unit Action Plans for FY’04 for this year’s strategic planning process. Phase II will begin the week of Dec. 9 with the review of the Unit Action Plans by the strategic planning committees. Observers representing classified staff, professional staff and faculty will be attached to each of the five functional area groups--Administrative Services, School of Technology, Community Programs, Academic Programs and Student Affairs--to observe presentations and committee discussions. Comments and recommendations from the counterparts of each functional committee (representing the five committees) will then be forwarded to the President and the Provost/Vice Presidents for a multi-perspective review. Phase III and IV will conclude with the Vice Presidents reviewing, developing, and finalizing program proposals which will be submitted the President in the spring. Please send your comments/input to Patty by December 16 to be included in the report to the President.
