Classified Staff Organization Meeting

September 20, 2002

Patty Leonard called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m.

Patty introduced Dona Van Trease, Executive Director of  the Idaho Public Employees Association IPEA.  Ms. Van Trease explained the IPEA is not a union but a membership-sponsored organization that takes a proactive stance to support state employees by lobbying in the state legislature for increases in salary, problem solving changes, child care assistance, health care funding, and several other issues. For more information or to apply for membership, check out their website:  www.ipeaonline.org

Provost Rita Morris spoke to the group concerning the revision of LCSC’s Financial Exigency Policy.  The Financial Exigency Policy talks about what we will do as an institution if the State Board of Education declares financial exigency.  The president will appoint a committee made up of two representatives from each constituency group (the faculty, professional staff, classified staf, and the senior administrative team).  The committee will develop a plan to deal with the financial exigency and every effort will be made to protect the mission of LCSC as a teaching institution.  Concerning Classified Staff the procedures are already outlined in the state personnel policy.  Rita encouraged each of us to review the policy that can be found at http://www.lcsc.edu/humanresources/policy/3.122.pdf.  Email or call Patty Leonard before November 1 with feedback, questions, or concerns.

The meeting continued with the approval of the minutes from the April 18, 2002 meeting.

Patty Leonard presented information about the professional development days that used to be held here on campus, usually on Secretary’s Day in April.  In the past, Professional Secretaries International (PSI) hosted the well-attended conferences, bringing well-known speakers and informative workshops to the area’s administrative and clerical personnel. PSI is no longer active in the valley and has not hosted the conference since 1998.  Patty asked if the CSO would be interested in hosting the conference.  Discussion followed with questions concerning number of people needed to work on the different committees, preparation time, whether to host a full-day or half-day event, topics of workshops, and sponsorship of the conference.  Patty will get more information for the CSO group to review.  Feedback on whether you think the CSO should host the conference, your willingness to work on a committee, and topics for the conference is requested.

Laura Moyer, Recognition Committee Chairperson, reported the Flea Market, September 19, was a success and thanked all who donated items for the sale.  $174.50 was raised, $9.31 state tax was paid, giving the CSO $166.19 to help pay for recognition awards and other activities we sponsor.   Laura also announced there will be a “silent auction” in the Spring and asked us to be thinking about donations for the auction.

Janell Miller, Campus Service/Employee Welfare Committee Chairperson, announced they are preparing for Christmas.  The CSO will join with ASLCSC, as they did last year, to provide Christmas to low-income families who have been referred by local agencies or campus departments.  Last year, seventeen families benefited from our donations and efforts.

Dawn Byers, gave details concerning the Campus Holiday Party which is scheduled for December 13.  Invitation will be sent out and RSVP are required.  The price will be $12.50/person or $20/couple.  The evening will consist of a pre-campus function at the President’s home, dance lessons in the WCC followed by dancing to live music, gambling and bingo.  Last year’s party was enjoyed by all who attended.

Computer classes will again be offered.  The classes were well received last spring.  The Professional Staff would also like to take some of the classes.  Your input is needed—what kind of classes would you like to take?  The classes do not have to be computer classes.  A questionnaire will be emailed to campus.

The Contemporary Social Issues Committee has invited John Morbeck from the Clarkston Police Department to give a self-defense workshop.  Tentative date for the workshop is October 30.  Everyone-- students, faculty, staff-- is invited and encouraged to attend this worthwhile, and possibly lifesaving, workshop.  Watch LCSC’s intranet for more details.

Sharon Auer presented an update on the CSO by-laws. The By-Laws Ccommittee has recommended some changes which we need to review and vote on.  Janell Miller will publish the suggested changes on the CSO website.  She will email the link to all CSO members.  The changes must be posted for two weeks prior to voting.  Results will be reported during the December meeting.

Sharon announced the Graphic Arts Department has a color digital copier.  Work-related campus copy jobs are welcomed.  Camera-ready copies cost sixty cents a sheet.  Big jobs of 50 or more copies will receive a price break. Call extension 2252 for more information.
